The Organic Acid Test (OAT) is a powerful urine test that gives a snapshot of what is going on in the body. The OAT reveals a lot about a person’s gut health, the presence of infections like C. diff, and the status of neurotransmitters in the body. Neurotransmitters like serotonin play a big role in depression and anxiety. Utilizing test gives your Nutrition Therapist at MoodFood Clinic a lot of information about which biochemical processes in the body are malfunctioning.

The OAT can be used to identify gut infections and overgrowths like candida and C. diff, which can lead to imbalances of neurotransmitters and resulting mood issues like depression and anxiety, and even bipolar disorder. By identifying any infections that may be present your Nutrition Therapist can best target the therapy you’re receiving to address that root cause. The result is that your symptoms of depression and anxiety improve because you’ve solved the underlying problem.

One reason a person may be low in serotonin can be a candida yeast infection, which can divert 5-HTP away from being converted into serotonin. Instead, 5-HTP is converted into quinolinic acid, an inflammatory metabolite. One common approach to address low serotonin is to simply supplement more 5-HTP along with cofactors that support its conversion into serotonin. This may likely provide some relief from depression and anxiety, but results may wane over time because the root problem hasn’t been addressed.

In contrast, by using the OAT your Nutrition Therapist can see all on one test that candida is high, quinolinic acid is high, and serotonin is low. He can then tailor a protocol to address that underlying infection. Once the infection is cleared up, the need to supplement 5-HTP or cofactors will decrease or go away entirely.

Our goal at MoodFood Clinic is to address your root cause so you get well and stay well. We don’t want you to take handfuls of supplements your whole life. To learn more about how we can use the OAT and other advanced laboratory tests to help you feel better, contact us today!
